Dear Mr. President,

A warm and enthusiastic mazel tov on your victory in the election and your inauguration as the 44th President of the United States, from your Jewish supporters, volunteers, and contributors.

It is fitting that the first Shabbat Torah reading after your victory was “lech lecha” (Genesis 12:1), in which God instructs Abraham to “go forth” from the land of his birthplace and set out on a journey to a new land that God will show him. This new beginning, infused with a determination to reach for something greater for the world and within ourselves, was truly the theme of the 2008 election. The victory that we all fought for has given us the chance to embark on a journey out of a broken economy; out of a bleak future for millions without health care or prospects of going to college or finding a good job; out of spending billions upon billions of dollars in Iraq with no end in sight; out of a politics that seeks to pit us against each other using tools of fear and hate; and up from our fallen international stature to once again become a beacon of hope and a moral voice in the world.

You inspired us to get out onto the path for change. You showed us — some for the first time — how to bring our Jewish values for making the world a better place (tikkun olam) into the realm of politics.  Many of us did not think that was possible.  For that gift we are truly grateful. Now that we are on the path, there is no turning back.

Yet the exhortation to “go forth” was just the beginning of Abraham and his wife Sarah’s journey. Along the way they faced many difficult trials before they reached their destination. Our own grandparents embarked on similar perilous journeys, from dark lands of endless oppression to this blessed place which would become our home, a nation where all can come to begin anew and command their own lives, in peace and prosperity.  Long ago, Jews coined a term for America as a ‘medina shel chesed,’ or a land of kindness.   The 2008 presidential election shone a spotlight on the most positive qualities of our citizens and the uplifting and promising aspects of our nation.

Rest assured, we will be here for you in the days ahead. We have worked hard to develop a network of Obama supporters, volunteers, and contributors from all sides of the rich panorama of Jewish-American life. We will not disperse when the victory celebrations have quieted, when the glitter of the inaugural balls is a memory. We will be here, united behind you, working together to support you as you lead us through the tremendous task of healing and rebuilding this great nation.

It has been an honor to be part of the fight to reach this day. Far from being tired, we are energized by the joy of seeing you — a president who truly represents our hopes and dreams — standing before the nation and the world to speak for us. We wish you and your family a smooth and enjoyable transition through the exciting days of moving into the White House.  We thank you for your calm, graceful and tireless dedication to focusing our national conversation on the issues that confront us as we strive to secure a bright future for all of our children in this country and around the world. We offer you our energy and our time as partners in the work ahead.  When you call on us, we will be ready. In the meantime, we will work to secure and grow the grassroots movement for change.

May God bless you with wisdom, strength, and good health.  All of us will be praying for you to have the physical and spiritual sustenance necessary for great success as the 44th president of our beloved United States.

With great respect, appreciation, and congratulations,
